All of the government officials that will comment state that the reason for the clear cut is to minimize the risk of a pine beatle infestation in Southern Alberta. The reason that there has been a risk is because we have been experiencing warmer than normal winters for the past few years (no global warming here). This year we have experienced a return to a typical “Canadian” winter, that should significantly reduce the pine beatle larva population, and with it the risk of the infestation spreading to Southern Albera. I believe that our recent weather has removed the validity of the government’s arguments, leaving them with no acceptable reason to allow the clear-cut to go ahead as scheduled.
